Google Keyword Planner has become a very important tool, not only for those interested in developing an Adwords campaign but also for SEO experts interested in knowing which keywords are more competitive, difficult or not worth ranking for.

Not every user of Google’s Keyword Data Planner develops Adwords campaigns, and not all of those who do, spend large amounts of money in their search engine marketing campaigns. Until now, Google Adwords offered users precise information regarding the search volume of different keywords and keyword phrases and offered valuable insight into how difficult it would be to compete for different keywords despite how much money they spent on the tool.

Earlier this week, some marketers noticed that Keyword Planner was not showing precise search volume but ranged data. The ranges shown were wildly broad, with results like “100k-1M” or “1M+”. It wasn’t a glitch from Google but a strategy developed on purpose to favour those high-spending advertisers on Google Adwords. As Google explained, “these changes will ensure that Adwords advertisers are able to get the data they need to optimize their accounts”.

Everything seems to indicate that from now on most advertisers will see the data displayed by the Keyword Planner as usual, but Adwords users that don’t spend as much money on their campaigns could see limited data. With these changes, the ranges that Google will provide for those with small or no spends makes the tool almost useless. The range that will be provided are as follows:

  • 0
  • 1-100
  • 100-1K
  • 1K-10K
  • 10K-100K
  • 100K-1M
  • 1M+

Users that search for data too often may also see ranged data.
